The ACOEP and ACOEP-RSO recognize that the ACGME’s proposed revisions to the Emergency Medicine residency program requirements introduce several significant changes, particularly the transition to a standardized 48-month curriculum (proposed effective date: July 1, 2027). The ACGME asserts that these updates reflect the evolving landscape of emergency medicine education, addressing critical areas such as clinical exposure, competency development, and patient care preparedness.

As dedicated advocates for emergency medicine residents and students, we acknowledge the impact these proposed changes may have on our community. Therefore, we encourage you to stay informed and actively engage in the discussion. The ACGME has opened a public comment period until May 1, 2025, providing an opportunity for individuals to share their perspectives and insights. We strongly encourage those invested in the future of emergency medicine education to review the proposal and submit their comments via the ACGME’s official platform.

For more details and to provide feedback, please visit the ACGME’s Review and Comment webpage. This page also includes a review of the Proposed Program Requirements and an Impact Summary.

Additionally, ACOEP will host a Town Hall with ACGME at our Spring Seminar on Monday, April 28, from 8:00–9:00 AM in Glendale, AZ. This event will provide members with the opportunity to hear directly from ACGME representatives and engage in an open discussion about the proposed changes.

ACOEP and ACOEP-RSO remain committed to supporting our members through these changes and will continue to advocate for the highest standards in emergency medicine training.
