The American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians stands in solidarity with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, and the residents of Hahnemann University Hospital in opposition to the administration’s attempts to sell residency slots.
“Residents are not commodities to be bought and sold,” said ACOEP Board President Christine Giesa, DO, FACOEP. “This situation not only compromises the careers of the residents, it undermines critical training for young physicians. Actions such as this run counter to everything ACOEP stands for.”
It is important for residents to know that they do not need to wait for bankruptcy proceedings to seek out a new residency slot. Furthermore, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the National Residency Matching Program has decided to waive restrictions on any Hahnemann matched applicant who decides to seek another training position, or is in communication with programs absent a waiver. Furthermore, national outcry on behalf of these residents have led many programs to open their doors to displaced Hahnemann residents.
