ACOEP adds our voice to the many statements on this important subject:
Since the birth of the specialty of emergency medicine, our focus has been on providing the public with emergency physicians who meet defined standards for competency and board certification. Credible data now demonstrates that the public’s access to residency prepared emergency physicians has matured such that our specialty can focus on maximizing the quality of emergency medicine programs. ACOEP strongly encourages the ACGME Emergency Medicine Residency Review Committee to thoughtfully study and take forceful action to advance emergency medicine residency training and quality standards in order to provide the public with ideally prepared graduates in a manner that supports diversity and an equitable distribution of specialists to include training of emergency medicine physicians who are most likely to practice in rural and underserved areas.
