The opioid epidemic has infected every community in America and every emergency department has seen its effects. While medical professionals may often see the tragic consequences of this addiction, they are not immune to addiction.

In his recent article in The Pulse, Stephen Kavalkovich opens up about his own struggles with opioid addiction and the toll it has taken in his own life. A 9/11 first responder, he found himself in the devastating grip of addiction. “I have seen tragedy and suffering first hand for many years,” he says.

“Little was I aware that I was the one who needed the saving. Through seeking peace within by using all things external, I wound up desperate, broken and destroyed in every way. I am now grateful to be a man in long term recovery from substance abuse and destitution. My goal is simple, to use my experience to connect and give you a voice.
